Shaving Cream Puffy Paint - Simple Fun for Kids (2025)

This was one of E’s very first shaving cream activities! As you’ll see, she had a blast with this Shaving Cream Puffy Paint – just one of many enjoyable afternoons playing with shaving cream 🙂

(E was 2 years and 3 months old)

Materials for Making Shaving Cream Puffy Paint:

How to make Shaving Cream Puffy Paint:

Mix shaving cream with glue and food coloring or paint (we used tempera paint). Make sure the shaving cream retains its “puffiness”, and don’t stir too hard. I was still able to use more tempera and mix more thoroughly than for our Marbled Hearts or Colored Shaving Cream – the odd white streak remained but once E was done with it, it hardly showed up on the finished product.

This was another 3-in-1 activity for us: Painting, sensory exploration, and a bath activity for clean-up. It worked out very similarly to when we made Marbled Hearts – E just can’t resist the texture of shaving cream 😉

She started out with one of the paintbrushes I’d provided but soon switched to the “two full hands” school of painting.

She tried a dry paintbrush somewhere along the way but it was really a finger painting kind of day.

Part 3 of our activity: The bath. E remembered from last time and put the plate full of paint into the bathtub right away. The water turned really red: Shaving Cream Puffy Paint - Simple Fun for Kids (9)

We did this as a Valentine’s activity, so I cut two hearts from E’s painting once it had dried. When I asked E where she wanted to hang them up, she pointed at the window – she wanted them right next to our Stained Glass Heart! Before you ask – yes, she stuck them on the window herself 😉

What I learned:

Shaving cream activities always seem to be quite enjoyable and messy for us 😉

Additional suggestions:

  • Use different colors.
  • Use paintbrushes or sponges for a different painting experience.
  • Put the paint in a baggy, cut off a corner and pipe it on the paper for extra puffiness.
  • Check out our article on Microwave Puffy Paint for a different spin on this idea that doesn’t use shaving cream.
